1882: Erath County citizens were expected to volunteer for roadwork and other civic maintenance. The county road supervisor was summoning residents for the day’s work when he reached the home of John Henning. When he called at the gate, Heninng stepped to the door and shot him off of his horse, killing him. The Fort Worth Democrat

1901: “The smallpox situation in Stephenville remains the same. A detention camp has been established near the poor farm (now the Texas A&M Extension Center) and all developed cases and exposures have been removed thereto. The Erath Appeal
